What is demiromantic flag?

The demiromantic flag is a symbol for people who identify as demiromantic. Demiromanticism is a specific subset of the asexual spectrum, which describes individuals who experience romantic attraction only after developing an emotional bond or connection with someone.

The flag is composed of four horizontal bars, which are all different shades of gray, with a white half-circle in the upper right-hand corner. The white half-circle represents demiromanticism, while the gray bars are said to represent the varying degrees of emotional connection that individuals experience before feeling romantic attraction. The shades from lightest to darkest are typically interpreted as follows:

  • White represents a lack of romantic attraction before an emotional bond is formed.
  • Light gray represents slow-building romantic attraction after forming an emotional bond.
  • Medium gray represents moderate romantic attraction after forming a deep emotional bond.
  • Dark gray represents strong romantic attraction after forming an intense emotional bond.

The demiromantic flag was designed by Tumblr user Alexander in 2014, in response to a survey conducted in the asexual community that found a significant number of respondents identified as demiromantic.
